Ultramafic rocks rich in Fe(II)-bearing minerals have a great potential to produce hydrogen.  Although the key Fe-oxidation reactions can be slow at near-surface temperatures, some partially-hydrated ultramafic rocks that have already experienced multiple episodes of water rock interaction are poised to produce hydrogen rapidly.  Our team will soon test this hypothesis by conducting a Pilot for stimulated hydrogen production in the Samail Ophiolite in Oman. I will present insights from the study of hydrogen rich aquifers that shape the target conditions for fluid circulation and hydrogen production.
